History of the James Bond Watch

When it comes to the perfect image of style, class and excitement, the character of James Bond fits the bill. Over the years, the men who have played James Bond have done a great job of maintaining the allure and excitement of the franchise. From Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, each performer has put a new twist on the classic James Bond image. For decades, the suave, dangerous, sexy and dashing James Bond has continued to woo audiences back into the movie theater with each new adventure.

The James Bond image is about much more than a very handsome and rugged secret agent who is virtually indestructible and irresistible to women. Everything about James Bond contributes to that image, including his phenomenal wardrobe, his flashy car with all those special features that help him perform amazing feats of daring-do, and his signature martini that was then and always will be, “shaken, not stirred.” However, just as much as all of those accessories helped mold the exciting image of James Bond, his watch played into that image as well.

1958 Rolex Submarnier
In the beginning, the signature James Bond watch was a Rolex. For 30 years, James Bond was known for his elegant and robust Rolex Submariner model. From the late 1950s well into the 1990s, if you saw a picture of the Bond character or watched a James Bond movie, that was the watch that adorned his wrist, whether he was in his classic tuxedo at a swanky event or on the job engaging enemies of mankind. The 1958 "James Bond" Rolex Submariner is such a collector's piece that it sells for an average price of $79,999.

However, like the infamous Bond character, the James Bond watch evolved over the years.
When Pierce Brosnan took over the James Bond image and brand, he brought his own unique style and image to the franchise. It was only then that the classic James Bond watch was brought up to date when the Brosnan Bond appeared on screen wearing a classy Omega Men’s Seamaster 300M watch.

Omega Seamaster 300
This new look to the classic James Bond image was a step in the right direction and it fit with the new stylish and handsome James Bond that Pierce Brosnan brought to the Bond mystique. The Omega Men’s Seamaster 300M was a departure because it had a modern styling and a great- looking blue dial that replaced the traditional black James Bond watch face. This was bold and fashion conscious, and it only added to the James Bond image as portrayed by Brosnan instead of taking anything away from it.

The makers of James Bond movies are not ignorant of the importance of such a big change to the image of their iconic character. There was an actual moment in the movie Goldeneye where the camera took a diversion to witness the change when Bond laid aside his old Rolex Submariner edition that had served the super spy so faithfully for 30 years and then put on his new Omega Seamaster 300M. That moment served as a ritual to bring the audience along on the continued evolution of their beloved James Bond character. The audiences had come to accept the change of actors to portray the famous James Bond and now they were allowed to participate in the changing of the guard in Bond’s timepiece as well.

Both the Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster watches are well known for being timepieces of extraordinary quality. When the famous James Bond was seen wearing one, no hard-core Bond aficionado would be caught dead with anything less. However, Bond was not the only celebrity figure that loves these brands of watches.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean
The evolution of the James Bond image will continue to be a big part of what keeps the franchise lively. When Daniel Craig took over the role, he brought that classic accessory up to date once more, switching the iconic watch of James Bond to an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M. In many ways, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M has a similar look and feel as the Omega Seamaster that had long served as the Bond wristwatch.

The James Bond watch is not an insignificant part of the reason why Bond is such a beloved character. The James Bond franchise is one of the most successful in movie history and there is little doubt that we will be seeing new James Bond performers do a great job in the role, just as Connery, Moore, Brosnan and Craig have done. We can also expect to see the classic James Bond watch continue to evolve into something new, exciting and modern with each new evolution of the character. The James Bond watch is as much an essential part of who Bond is as his Walther PPK pistol and his iconic martini preference. They all make James Bond a memorable character and one that we will continue to come back to enjoy again and again for many years to come.
